Axel Chay is now entering a new phase in his creative process, freeing himself from labels and compartmentalisation.

Alongside Melissa, his partner and the studio’s artistic director, the duo brings their vision to life through scenography, installations, and the creation of sets and living spaces. Complementary in their approach, they go beyond design and the scale of the object, embracing complete freedom in the way they express and bring the Axel Chay language to life within a space.

From Object to Place

The new Marseille restaurant and bar by Axel & Mélissa Chay, led by chef Ferdinand Fravega.

The role of Studio Axel Chay in this project goes far beyond a simple design gesture, it unfolds on the scale of an entire space. Mélissa Chay envisioned the restaurant in its entirety and directed the artistic concept: materials, colors, lighting, objects, and volumes. Axel, meanwhile, designed the furniture, all specially created for the restaurant.

For Devo, they worked hand in hand to imagine a refined, softly textured setting that perfectly blends Mediterranean roots with creative freedom, tradition with modernity. Their inspiration draws from Italian bars and cafés, as well as Spanish vermuterias and bodegas, vibrant, convivial places where décor stands the test of time.

Devo speaks through its materials: wood, stone, deep lacquer, stainless steel. Nothing feels slick or overdone, everything is just right. Warm tones envelop the space in an intimate, velvety atmosphere reminiscent of the 1970s. Lacquered surfaces capture the light, while wooden and stone volumes reveal themselves in shadow, turning every detail into a point of interest.

The furniture mostly custom-designed but also enriched with carefully sourced vintage pieces interacts with the space to create a world that is at once radiant, graphic, and timeless.

SEPTEMBER 2023

Renovation of a Marseillaise house from the 1930s, into a hybrid space, simultaneously a place of creation, manufacturing, exhibition and housing for Axel Chay pieces.

In this house the characteristic elements of the Roaring Twenties : cement tiles, red marble fireplace, moldings, ironwork set the tone for the layout of the place while respecting its history. Axel Chay furniture offers itself a setting. From unique pieces designed for each space, to the prototype just out of the workshop on the ground floor, the entire Axel Chay universe is being experienced in this house-workshop.

SEPTEMBER 2019

Renovation of a house from the end of the 19th century into an artistic refuge. The idea of creating a large white cube to highlight a collection of design pieces, works and Axel Chay creations.

The original character of the place has been preserved while infusing it with refined modernity.

Constantly in motion, the interior can evolve with new creations and discoveries, abolishing the boundary between domestic space and work space. This instinctive and lively approach to decoration reflects a desire to create a place where art and everyday life merge naturally, offering a setting conducive to experimentation and inspiration.
